STEPHEN HATCHER · FINE ART WOODTURNING AND SCULPTURE

Life on the Edge

Comment: The inspiration for this piece occurred on a trip down the Tatshenshini River, Alaska. During this trip we had lunch on a small island where we found a rock carved with a pattern similar to the sunburst on this piece. From the lichen growing in the carving it was deemed ancient and the photos and documentation were forwarded by our guide to the U. of Alaska. The swirling grain of this wood and its rugged natural edge immediately reminded me of this river trip and the unknown native peoples that lived in this area and created the original design.
